The Internet, Quake, Pineapples and All by Andrew Gerrand

Every day when I get home from school I sit down at my computer, press the power button and wait for Win95 to load. After getting back with my coffee, Windows has just finished loading, so I double-click on my Alphalink (INET) icon and the modem begins to dial.

Once online, I immediately start Netscape Navigator and check my email, I check my newsgroups, and then I open up WinQuake and play for a solid two hours. "Why does he do this?" I hear you cry. Well, it's mainly because of a slight addiction I have concerning playing Quake multiplayer..

It all started when I read in the alphalink.quake newsgroup that Brett Murphy (the tech-guy at my ISP) needed someone to be the Quake Administrator. Well, I knew Quake quite well and I could program in QuakeC, so I replied to the posting saying "Count me in!" Then I was thrust into the midst of a vast Quake community, where allies are made, and are broken constantly. Clans are formed and disbanded. Everything happens so quickly, if you stop for two days, you miss it all.

I am now a regular part of the Alphalink Quake Server. I have gathered a few patches, and have started to work a few things out with the Operators. Pretty soon I will be changing patches and levels every week for different theme weeks, etc... This is how I have become addicted. Now, I MUST play Quake every 2 days at a minimum, more if possible, and if I were to break my modem, my Quake life would end. Maybe that's the answer...
